MESSAGES FROM THE 2010 COSIM CONFERENCE

These items from the 2010 COSIM conference in Lombard, Illinois, are listed here as a group for easy reference. We will also attempt to integrate these messages into the subject fields below. All are approximately 60 minutes long unless otherwise noted.

A Denominational Mission Agency Embraces Cross-Cultural Partnerships. (PDF) Joel Hogan, Director of International Ministries for Christian Reformed World Missions tells how the denominational mission agency shifted from being a traditional missionary sending agency to today’s vision of seeing “the CRCNA vigorously participating in Spirit-led mission with churches and other Christian organizations throughout the world so that together we are proclaiming the gospel to more and more people who have not heard it, healthy churches are emerging, and the kingdom of God is advancing.” We don't have the voice recording, but this manuscript provides the text of his talk. See also the PowerPoint presentation below that accompanies it.

A Denominational Mission Agency Embraces Cross-Cultural Partnerships. (PPS) This PowerPoint show accompanies Joel Hogan's presentation by the same title, above. We don’t have the voice recording, but this PowerPoint shows the story in an outline. Please use with print document of talk above.

There is a growing body of literature on partnership between mission agencies in the majority (Two-Thirds) world and churches and mission agencies in the western, traditional missionary-sending countries. We can't begin to give a complete bibliography on this topic, but some that have been key to our conferences are as follows:

Cross-Cultural Partnerships; Navigating the Complexities of Money and Mission by Mary Lederleitner, a member of the 2010 COSIM Resource Team, was published by InterVarsity Press in spring of 2010. Mary is a researcher, author, trainer and consultant for Wycliffe International and has traveled to many fields to help Wycliffe personnel deal with cross-cultural issues. Before joining Wycliffe she was a CPA and tax examiner for the IRS. Mary is well-qualified to write on this subject, and her book has been well received by experts in cross-cultural ministry. More bio is found on the 2010 conference speakers page.

When Helping Hurts: Alleviating Poverty without Hurting the Poor...and Ourselves by Brian Fikkert and Steve Corbett was the topic of a 2010 workshop led by Dr. Phil Thornton of Global Impact Missions.

Breaking Tradition to Accomplish Vision by Dr. Paul R. Gupta, President of Hindustan Bible Institute in Chennai, India, and Dr. Sherwood G. Lingenfelter, Provost of Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California was the key resource book for the 2007 COSIM conference. Read more about this key book.
